Panthor's armor?

As I said in a previous post the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Series Guide was given to stations wishing to pick up the show for broadcast. Like the Series Bible it contains lots of character histories, early conceptual drawings, and episodes that were never made. Here I present the earliest design of Skeletor's pet Panthor! You will notice immediately that the original design was intending for Panthor to be a direct clone of Battle Cat minus the stripes. You will also notice the odd color scheme; an actual black panther, with purple armor. Fortunately the Filmation character designers saw sense, ditched the helmet, and made him the evil, vicious, purple panther we all know and love...or should that be fear?!

Howdy

Yeah...the finalised Panthor is alot better than this!!! One thing that makes me prefer Cringer over Battle-Cat is the fact we can clearly see Cringer's expressions and reactions to any given situation and this is lost with Battle-Cat having a helmet covering two thirds of his face.

And although we don't see that much of Panthor we are able to see his expressions whether they be angry, scared or defeated.

Just as the boxart for Battlecat-figure shows He-Man with BC facing the villains, who are also on "Battlecats", so too does this early drawing sport the general idea of being a "battlecat" or "panthor" was not a rarity in Eternia, but that the land was full of these beasts that would be used for transportation, often with helmets.

Aside from the different colored armor, this is probably what Battlecat would have looked like had he been the one who fell into the Tar Swamp, instead of Skeletor, from "Return of Evil!" LOL :)

Yes, I agree ... An animated black panther would have never showed up well on screen, especially when the show was on the air. Plus, a helmet is better suited for a character like Granamyr! :)

Thanks for posting and reading! God Bless...

I am eternally thankful that they did not give Panthor the Battle-Cat gear! It would have been far, far too much! (Besides, I like the Panthor helmet we got from the 4H for the MOTUC line, LOL!)

It's interesting that Mattel designed a new helmet for Panthor for the MOTU Classics line. (Not a recolored Battle Cat Helmet)

Even as a kid I'd have found it hard to swallow that they would have been cheap enough to just use the same cat figurines. At least with Panthor he was furry compared to Battle Cat/Cringer.
