The Iron Master!

Here is a wonderful illustration by Robin Davies taken from the He-Man Ladybird book "The Iron Master." As I mentioned in a previous Blog entry the Ladybird books stated that no being with a trace of evil within them could hold the Sword of Power without it burning their hand, thus Skeletor has the giant Iron Master built in an effort to obtain the Sword of Power! The colors in this image are very striking, and the small touches, like the light blue line around Skeletor, help create a memorable image.

That was one of my favorites of all the Ladybird books. I loved the artwork as I always found it very atmospheric, and and the tape that came with it helped enhance this, they used fantastic sound effects and music. As a kid I found the Iron Master itself rather scary, and I've always loved the ending of that book, with the lightning storm climax and the Iron Master's dramatic death scene.

That's a great image, but I don't think it is even in the top three images from that book. It's probably my favourite Ladybird book and would have made a great TV episode.

Boy does that scan bring back memories. I really regret leaving my Labybird book collection in England. I think the Ladybird illustrator was one of the most underappreciated guys who used to work on the original Masters.

The contrast between the blues and the reds is amazing, in this illustration! Both Skeletor and The Iron Master look as though they're victorious, already. :)

The backdrop to this scene looks like the interior of the Amber Fortress ("Orko's Return") with a more crimson tone used for the walls, on this occasion. :)

Thanks for posting and reading! God Bless...

Ooh - what I wouldn't have given for an Iron Master from Mattel - or a 'Skelcon' figure (Skeletor's slaves with havoc-staff heads) in fact Ladybird gave BeastMan and MerMan their own slaves, like they were cappas of their own families in Skeletor's mafia. Beast-Man had these wolf-headed guys while Mer-Man had these green gnome people that worked his crew. Brilliant!

Awesome, awesome image.
The artwork is simply wonderful and Iron Master appears incredibly menacing.

The red tones in the background make this pic a very memorable. And didn't even notice the rim-light on Skeletor at first. :)
