I AM the Power!

In many of the early issues of the UK Masters of the Universe comic we would see Prince Adam transform into He-Man. However they would often use the phrase "I AM the Power" instead of "I HAVE the Power", as seen in this panel from issue thirteen's "My Sword, My Enemy!" This change of dialogue made no sense whatsoever to an audience of children who had watched the series for years! My only guess is that the original phrase was misheard by the writer, which I fail to believe, or that they just felt like changing it...

He got the "I am the power" because Skeletor already had dibs on "I am a God-od-od-od-od!". ;)

Maybe the idea was that He-Man was supposed to be "The 'Power' of Eternia?"

In this case, She-Ra probably would have said something like:
"I am the She-Power!" :)

Thanks for posting and reading! God Bless...

That "I am the Power" stuff always used to confuse me as a kid. I don't have my collection with me where I currently live but I seem to remember "I Am the Power" being uttered in Ladybird books or the annuals as well?

The "I am the Power" phrase was used slightly more commonly than one might expect- not only did the UK comics use it in their early issues, but the newsletters issued quarterly by Mattel's He-Man fan club also used it. Being run by Mattel you'd expect they'd get the phrase right, but they printed it that way in just about every newsletter, He-Man would even often end his 'greeting' editorials with "By the Power of Grayskull, we are the Power".

Although I must confess, when I was a kid I did initially mishear the phrase myself, even before I read the comics I actually thought He-Man was saying "I AM the Power" so maybe it was a common mishearing!

In response to Markout's question- this error was not used in the Ladybird books; in fact they ignored the "I Have the Power" line completely, Adam just said "By the Power of Grayskull" to turn into He-Man.

Now for some speculation: while He-Man was saying "I am the Power" on Eternia, was his sister over on Etheria saying "I HAVE She-Ra"? ;)

It seems to be a common mistake. When my father mentions He-Man to me, even now, he thinks the line in "I AM the Power".

Back in the 1980s, I guess there wasn't the quality control over spin-off merchandise that (one would hope) there is nowadays.

This phrase is something that was also misheard by finnish translators when they were dubbing the episodes for VHS.

Not sure how propable it is for UK comic staff people. After all, "the cartoon often makes mistakes", so maybe He-Man's phrase has always in fact, been "I am the Power!" xDDD
