Happy Birthday He-Man #1 - Heroes of Eternia.

Yes, on this very day twenty-three years ago He-Man and the Masters of the Universe premiered in the UK before any other country in the world! Little did Filmation or Mattel know at the time that their new cartoon series would influence the lives of millions of young children. For all of us who grew up in the eighties, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a big part of our childhoods. The characters, settings, and stories will never be forgotten!

To celebrate He-Man's twenty-third birthday I am featuring TWENTY-THREE He-Man entries in one single session! :)

So, let the fun begin...

Here is an image from the pilot episode "Diamond Ray of Disappearance" which really defines two of the characters in the He-Man series, summing up their role in relation to Eternia. Here we see He-Man and Battle Cat almost "keeping watch" over the Royal Palace and Eternia. It is a very atmospheric image using a very familiar panning shot to full effect. What is amusing is that in the actual episode from his vantage point He-Man and Battle Cat both can see Skeletor's Robot Knights have taken control of the Royal Palace. Now we know He-Man has good vision, but look where he is in comparison to the Royal Palace! His vision cannot be that good!

I never tire of seeing these 'reassembled' panning shots, especially when this one's from the first episode!

I always though it would be a great idea if there was a whole website devoted to animation panning shots; Filmation shows would undoubtedly pride of place!

Another great job on capturing this panning shot, but the sad thing is this is the spot in the episode that immediately follows the deleted scene of Orko escaping the villains, which wasn't included on the DVD. :(

...Would have been nice if a fan who had the full version of the episode on VHS sent in a copy to BCI and was able to feature the deleted scene on an upcoming Filmation DVD release.

You know, I never thought about that observation that you mentioned at the end of your caption, James! Maybe He-Man had a pair of binoculars on hand that he used to get a closer look at Skeletor's Hover Robots, when the camera wasn't on him! :)

Thanks for posting and reading! God Bless...

Awesome panning shot James! I remember as a kid always wondering how He-Man could see the Hover Robots so well. As for what Kevin said about DVD missing the scene I know you James already had excellent VHS-version of the scene but it is a shame the matter was ER preventing BCI from using material that wasn't digitized by Hallmark.
