In the first episode of
The New Adventures of He-Man,
"A New Beginning", we see the
Eternian Royal Palace in all its glory. It is clear that the artists looked to the
Filmation show for inspiration, at least with the initial entrance. However, here the Royal Palace does not look that inviting, and is somewhat grim in its appearance. Much like the homage to Filmation's
Snake Mountain in the same episode, this could be any old background. That said, it is nice that they decided to pay homage to the original series.

Wonder what sense does it make for royal palace to be in a desert...
Looks more like the desert settings from the Filmation series, plus the gray structure looks like the villages from the "Return of the Gryphon" and "One for All" episodes or the Great Eternian Dam from "Island of Fear." :)
Thanks for reading! God Bless!

I always thought this was too drastic of a change for the royal palace. It reminds me of the Cat's lair a bit. Perhaps a rebel base that was built, but no royal palace.
Skeletor probably had the palace attacked recentily and that could explain it's apperence at least to a fan it would. ;)
But yeah in general, they could have made it look more inviting, unless they were trying to say that it is this way because of Skeletor's presence on Eternia overall, if that's the case, they may have gone a little over the top.
If this is what the Royal Palace looked like, imagine what Castle Greyskull may have looked like. 'shivers'.
