Why did Castaspella sound so old?

Melendy Britt was a fine voice actress in the She-Ra series; most notably voicing Adora, She-Ra, and Catra perfectly. However, when it came to the role of Castaspella, something went wrong somewhere. Many of those that worked on She-Ra felt that the voice was completely out of sorts with the look of the character. And they were right! Whilst Melendy gave Castaspella a truly unique-sounding voice, it was clearly suited to a much older character. Why this particular voice was chosen to suit the character by the heads at Filmation will always puzzle me...

I just assumed Castaspella was a heavy smoker.

Beautiful still of her. :) Yeah, seemed that everyone felt this way ... Maybe it was something that stayed with her after she was was transformed back from an elderly lady into her true self from the "Enchanted Castle" episode ... Who knows? Sounds more like the voice of a character who could be Madame Razz' sister. :) Thanks for reading and God Bless! ~"KevyGuy" :)

While I know she sounds on the show, it might have been more better if you had made a short compilation of some Castaspella-scenes in a video, showcasing the drastic difference of her voice to the design of the character. :)

Casta's voice always felt right to me--I mean, I agree that it seemed a little...off, by comparison with her image, but I never took issue with that. I think it connoted a sense of wisdom and etherialness (is that a word?) to her character.

I agree with Kevin when he says that maybe Casta keep the voice of the elderly lady. Anyway I think its a lovely voice and is one of my favorite characters! Mystacor is amazing!! Thanks for sharing!

I love that at Power-Con we got an explanation for the voice. (for those who don't know it was her impression of Kathryn Hepburn)

This could have been a descision to make the characters more unique, so that if a person were not looking at the screen and heard Castaspella speaking, the person would automatically know it was Castaspella speaking. Also she looks as If she would have a more of a mature female voice in my opinion.

I like her voice, it's unique and does not sound "old" in my opinion. But then Castaspella is my favorite from all POP girls.

It's not "old" sounding to me.Just all the smoke that goes with her magic gave her a touch of asthma, but it could also I think it was way to show her wisdom.

Its always weird when some voices like She-Ra or Catra just click and work but this one sadly doesnt. How would you have liked to see her voiced James?

Personally Castaspella's voice never bothered me that much - it adds a sense of wisdom and mysticism to her voice, and also makes it stand out against all the other, much younger-sounding female voices that were present! :)
