Why was Mermista French?

I love it when animated shows inexplicably give their characters Earth-based accents, even though these characters hail from alien worlds! One such example is Mermista in the She-Ra series. Melendy Britt voiced numerous characters throughout the series, but for some strange reason the decision was made to have Mermista speak with a French accent! Oddly, this accent suited her character, and enhanced her few appearances in the series, and in the season two episode "The Pearl" we learn that all of Mermista's race speak with a French accent.

It could possibly have to do with French folk tales involving mermaids, although I'm not aware of anything specific. The term 'Mer' comes from the Old English for 'sea', and thus 'Mer' also means 'sea' in French. Maybe this is of some significance to why they gave her a French accent.

Favorite dialog for the French accent, for me, was in "A Christmas Special" ... I love the way Mermista says, "The Beast Monster" and "It's very dangerous." :) Thanks for reading and God Bless! ~"KevyGuy" :)

I couldn't see... or should I say hear... Merrmista with out her French accent. It sounds like extra gases are escaping as she talks which help with the illusion of someone who lives under the sea.

Mermista's accent always caught me a bit off guard, but I loved it--as you pointed out, it suited her. Following up on Kevin Martinell's line of thought: my favorite was when she said "Ze Beast Mon-Stair"!

I consider it a positive giving her a french accent. It just seemed fitting considering she was of another race. Why not give her an accent thats so much more different the rest of the core characters.

The case of French-accented talking Mermista is very similar to Netossa speaking English accent!. I really do not know why it was decided to do it this way, but I think it makes the Etherians more "human"! Or near us!

The French accent suited Mermista well. For some reason, it fitted in well with the look of the character. As always, Melindy Britt, did a wondeful job with voicing Mermista.

I always loved Mermista's voice, which I always found very attractive - can I get away with using the word "sexy" on this blog?? :)
