A brief review #009 - "The Dragon Invasion"

As many of you will know, in 2010 I published The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. At 300+ pages the book features 700+ pieces of trivia, 460+ deleted scenes, 360+ examples of animation reuse, 380+ quotes, 50+ abandoned episodes, and a LOT more! It is the book that NO fan of the Filmation series can live without! BUY IT NOW!

As an incentive, here is my brief review and rating (as they appear in the book) for "The Dragon Invasion"...

Out all the episodes in the series, this one has to be one of the most action-packed; delivering confrontations and surprising conflicts as the story unfolds. We see a large cast of both heroes and villains, and yet all get a decent amount of screen time, with none of them feeling forced into the script. Skeletor's conquering of Castle Grayskull and his battle with He-Man at Snake Mountain provide the benchmark for all such future conflicts in the series. It should be noted that the pacing throughout the episode is near perfection, especially the way in which Skeletor conquers Castle Grayskull. This episode represents everything that is good about the conceptual beginnings of the series. 8/10

Now, may I ask; what is YOUR rating?

Seems like a perfect episode to me ... When you reviewed the episode back in the 1990s, James, you've pinpointed all of the best moments: The one and only appearance of Jitsu, the image of Skeletor's face in front of Castle Grayskull at the end of Act One (Like in the intro), the "teamwork" theme featuring the dragons working together, and He-Man battling the giant Skeletor! Oh yeah, I also got a kick out of the "twist" on Prince Adam transforming into He-Man ... The whole "shadow" and "buried under rubble" thing. :) Thanks for reading and God Bless! ~"KevyGuy" :)

My only regret with this episode is that they didn't focus more on the Sorceress being trapped at Snake Mountain, LOL!

I also really love this episode - dragons + Eternia is a bit of a no-brainer, but what's great is not just that the dragons are introduced, but the way that they're introduced, really reinforcing the concept of Eternia as a magical place where anything can happen. Definitely one of the best early episodes! :)

Boy what a great cast in this one! And though Mer-Man doesn’t appear, even he gets a mention by Skeletor. Indeed it’s a shame Jitsu never appeared again after this. Having Adam draw his sword in shadow is very original, but shouldn’t we be seeing him doing this in reverse? I guess it depends on the way he’s standing in the door opening, which we don’t get to see. I like how He-Man & Teela walk straight past the Dragon Pearl at Snake Mountain without even noticing it and Teela walks out again without it. 8 out of 10 from me.
