Fading out...

The Masters of the Universe minicomic "Enter: Buzz-Saw Hordak!" was one of the few appearances made by Mosquitor, one of the last action figures released in the toyline. It must have been hard to script a character into a book aimed at kids that sucked blood; with the blood intake visible inside his chest! The minicomic handled his power in a way that was kid-friendly. In these panels by Bruce Timm we see that as Mosquitor drains an individual's "life force", they begin to fade from sight. As much fun as the toy is, I think, in context with the comic, this works better than merely "sucking blood"...

Mosquitor has powers like Leech, so I would think that the villains are draining the energy/strength of others. Nice job on the "fading" effects on He-Man's face, at the bottom of the page. :) Thanks for reading and God Bless! ~"KevyGuy" :)

I don't think I even discovered the Mosquitor figure existed until I hit the online He-Man community back in 1999 - if I did, I had no real memories of him... :)

I'd have LOVED to have seen how Filmation would have handled this character, given that his blood-sucking powers and visuals were so out-of-sync with the material Filmation featured! :)

This may well be my favorite of the minicomics! The fading they did on He-Man was awesome, but, for me, it was all about the Sorceress' role in the action! (And the fact that she--and everyone else--is drawn so wonderfully!)

Timm did a great job of showing how powerful Mosquitors draining power was on He-Man! The fading really shows a sense of danger and madness that builds him up as a serious threat for kids to incorporate.

I remember getting Mosquitor as an Easter present. Gruesome! Not really your normal Easter fare. Of course the old media would veer away from the idea of sucking blood. I like the fact that they used the term "life essence." I remember using that term myself as a kid when justifying the character to my Mom!

I was not that big of a fan of this idea. It reminded me too much of Leech's power-sucking ability. It would've been interesting though if by draining the life force, he would also develope the victim's special abilities for a short period of time. Like, suddenly being able to do some poor magic because he's drained Orko!

Nicely handled with the lack of blood shown and yet the whole concept is apparent. From a composition standpoint, I love the angled comic panels adding a sense of urgency and things not quite right to the overall page. I never liked the mini comics growing up but I find myself appreciating them more now. Thanks for posting these.

I was never too big a fan of the rather tame action of the cartoon show. Even in my childish MOTU canon the world of the masters was much wilder than anything from Filmation. I really liked some of the later mini-comics and the action presented in them. As Mosquitor was never released here in Germany it´s great to see such a dramatic moment for the first time.

I feel like the fading effect was executed well to make it more kid friendly, while still giving off the effect of the victim getting weaker and weaker due to the loss of blood. I feel like it was well balanced.

Mosquitor was such a brilliant concept for a villain. After all, who doesn't hate mosquito's!? To quote Billy Dee Williams: he just oozes mean!

Did Mosquitor ever make it into the TV show? He seems like such a cool character.

I liked Mosquitor's appearance in one of the comics too. I think it has him and He-Man falling off of a cliff or something? Pretty cool character...

Hmmm... I never actually owned Mosquitor as a kid. What mini-comic did he come with? I assume it didn't show him sucking anything out of anyone, based on what you said.
