A brief review #021 - "The Royal Cousin"

As many of you will know, in 2010 I published The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. At 300+ pages the book features 700+ pieces of trivia, 460+ deleted scenes, 360+ examples of animation reuse, 380+ quotes, 50+ abandoned episodes, and a LOT more! It is the book that NO fan of the Filmation series can live without! BUY IT NOW!

As an incentive, here is my brief review and rating (as they appear in the book) for "The Royal Cousin"...

Robby London not only manages to include a great deal of character development in this script, but also turns in an enjoyable action-packed story; featuring a small, but great cast of characters. Prince Jeremy has to be one of the most dislikeable characters to have ever appeared in the series. It is a testament to both the writing, and the voice acting of Erika Scheimer that he also has one of the most believable character turns. The story itself is thoroughly entertaining with Evil-Lyn enjoying her time in the spotlight. As the episode progresses it is interesting to see how each character reacts to Jeremy; and that in itself is what makes the episode better than most. 6/10

Now, may I ask; what is YOUR rating?

Definitely a perfect rating for me on this episode! This is one of those episodes where He-Man is put through a few real tough situations, including his attempt to stop an out-of-control Sky Sled, suffering the effects of the Rock Softener, and being challenged by an expanding "Growth Globe!" This is also one of those episodes where Castle Grayskull is in serious danger. Man-At-Arms' reaction towards Jeremy is great and Prince Adam gives his cousin some good advice about his attitude and actions, at the beginning of the second half of the episode. We also have to feel sorry for Ram-Man attempting to "babysit" Jeremy! I agree with James about Evil-Lyn being one of the strongest characters in the episode and she is really at the top of her game too. Both Evil-Lyn and Tri-Klops really work well together throughout the episode, and it is a shame that the two of them didn't work together more often in the series. The last few minutes of the episode are nice, with Jeremy getting the chance to redeem himself. One of the best episodes of the series indeed! We even get cameos of Skeletor and then Teela, at the very beginning of the episode. :) Thanks for reading and God Bless! ~"KevyGuy" :)

Was this the first episode they started giving kid characters Earth names?

I just love Adam's expression in that scene.

'We're very dissapointed in you, Prince Jeremy. We all ready did a subplot about drugs in another episode and we all rady explainned to the audience, how bad they are. Now you can just stay here and think about what you've done'., says Adam.

'Oh yeah well....at least I don't go around wearing a pink shirt and purple trousers with matching fuzzy underwear'., replied Jeremy.

Adam stood there for a moment and said.....'Touche'. :D

Yeah the drug subplot thing is just a random joke. :D

Why post the link to buy your book if it is sold out? I'd love to buy it, in fact it is how I found out about this blog.

Jeremy is a bad boy, all around. I am a teacher, and so I know such a person as Jeremy actually exists. Someone who finds fun in causing trouble for other people.

I did not enjoy this episode at all. Jeremy annoyed me as do the majority of the kids in the series. I know James was a big fan of "The Starchild"! I'd give it about a 4/10.

Last time I watched this episode it was a Finnish dubbed version from the 80's, which is pretty horrible. Personally I'd give this episode (the original English version) 5/10 (it's an average episode, not good or bad).

Even as a kid I always felt like the little kids in He-man were so whinny. It makes me wonder now if the writers has kids. Kids are whinny but not really in the way they were represented in the show. "Oh but I wanted to be important" or "But the grown ups get to have all the fun"

This episode is a bit of a 50/50 split for me - part of the problem I have with it is that Jeremy is such an annoying character, but at the same time that's a huge part of what makes the episode work so well! :)

Overall I find it a good, solid, enjoyable episode, with some very entertaining material from Ram Man! So, with all of that in mind, I'd probably agree with your rating. :)

Honestly, I can't even remember much about this episode. I do, however, recall seeing Jeremy - so I definitely saw it about 25 years ago! I'm actually going through the series again right now, and this episode comes up in two episodes time. It's just a pity I won't have received your re-printed guide by then! :(

Jeremy looks exactly like one of my students. I'm a teacher and had a student about 6 years ago who was not so fun to have in the classroom. Every time I see this episode it takes me back to that student and the problems that HE caused!!!

Love the review. And is it wrong for me to say I "hated" Jeremy? Never liked him.

Boy, Jeremy sure is a popular name over on Eternia. And judging by his personality, he must be related to Lady Edwina. Interesting how the episode starts with He-Man having already foiled (the first part of) Evil-Lyn and Tri-Klop’s plan. It’s like a James Bond picture where you missed the teaser in front of the title song. I love it when Evil-Lyn reminds Tri-Klops to use his dista-vision and when Duncan’s mouth drops open at the end as Adam almost reveals too much about himself and He-Man. Also, I think Shuki Levy reused a snippet from his Inspector Gadget music at the start of the street market scene. 7 out of 10 from me.

Here’s a bit of Children’s ITV trivia: when this episode was first broadcast in the UK on November 12 1984, Bonnie Langford was presenting CITV. While introducing He-Man, Bonnie wondered if she might end up looking like Teela if she did some bodybuilding.
