A brief review #035 - "The Sleepers Awaken"

As many of you will know, in 2010 I published The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. At 300+ pages the book features 700+ pieces of trivia, 460+ deleted scenes, 360+ examples of animation reuse, 380+ quotes, 50+ abandoned episodes, and a LOT more! It is the book that NO fan of the Filmation series can live without! BUY IT NOW!

As an incentive, here is my brief review and rating (as they appear in the book) for "The Sleepers Awaken"...

This episode feels as if it takes place in another part of Eternia, far removed from what we know. Prince Adam and Teela's character interaction is really quite sweet in the opening scenes, with both John Erwin and Linda Gary lacing the dialogue with a smile. The characters of Lord Tyrin and Lady Valtira are wonderfully scripted both in their dialogue and actions. Because these characters are clearly confused between good and evil we are treated to some very interesting storytelling. While Lady Valtira may make for some terrific eye candy, Lord Tyrin is the star of the episode; his lonely tale of disfigurement, love, and rejection; revealing a dark, brooding hero. 7/10

Now, may I ask; what is YOUR rating?

Totally agree, Sir! A wonderful moment in the episode that took place was when He-Man went back to rescue a vicious giant snake that tried to attack him, after the heroes escaped the crumbling castle ... He-Man would always try to rescue another living being from danger, good or evil. I also really liked his advice to Lady Valtira, "Power does not create beauty any more than slavery creates friends." Thanks for reading and God Bless! ~"KevyGuy" :)

I love this episode. Good chemistry between Adam and Teela, Valtera and Tyran are among the best guest characters ever in the show and Valtera is easily the most stunning female character ever. The whole episode has the feel of a Gothic romance, by far one of the best episodes of season 1, and probably of the whole series!
