FILMATION FEBRUARY - DAY: 27

Background line art from MU020 "Dawn of Dragoon"

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

Here we see an intricately detailed background of Dragoon's Fortress from the He-Man episode "Dawn of Dragoon". Although Trolla was predominantly an organic planet full of strange imagery, Dragoon's Fortress bore a stark contrast to that world. One has to admire the level of detail as well as the time it probably took to illustrate this background.

Beautiful image of Trolla background. I am not normally a big fan of that episode because it revolved around Orko and the episode introduced Dree Elle, but the Filmation backgrounds for Trolla were a good break from the SM and jungle backgrounds we predominately saw.

Now I have to draw a parallel here to a totally different fantasy world, but seeing this image reminds me a lot of the City Elric was known to be from as drawn by P. Craig Russell. It's interesting both his adaptations of Elric and He-Man were out about the same time, I wonder if there was any influence from the imagery in Elric in He-Man, in particular, this fortress :) Needless to say, the detail's lovely :D

Looks like a deranged "Emerald City." :) I like how the "crystal formations," as I like to call them, point in different directions and that some of them have broken edges for added variety ... The steps make me think of an escalator too! Great detail. :)

Wow. This looks simply beautiful. Black&White version always makes me appreciate the art a bit more. :)
