Panini sticker album art #28

When I was a kid, one of my most prized possessions was the Masters of the Universe sticker album by Panini. I still remember the day my mother purchased the album for me. Aside from the fun of collecting the stickers themselves I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the Filmation-accurate illustrations that could be found on each and every page. I thought it would be a good idea to showcase those illustrations on this very Blog!

Here we see He-Man striking a Hover Robot, as the Heroic Warriors confront Skeletor...

"Twiggets in Trouble" #3

Here I present "Twiggets in Trouble", a two part story from rarely-seen preview issue of the UK She-Ra comic. In this story Hordak manages to capture Spragg and Sprocker! See the rebels fight Hordak, a group of Horde Troopers, a fleet of Batmex, whilst saving the Twiggets and freeing a village enslaved by the Horde. All in a day's work for She-Ra! Here are the final three pages...

"Flameron's Slaves"

As He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was developed into a series, the staff writers at Filmation came up with a wealth of proposed story premises. Numerous episodes were never developed beyond the early stages. Showcased below is one of those abandoned episodes, alongside a title card that I have created to show what might have been. Please note that in some of these synopses Orko is still referred to as Gorpo, Evil-Lyn as Desira, and the Evil Warriors as the Masters of the Universe. The Sorceress does not appear to have been fully developed at this point either; with many references instead to the Spirit of Grayskull. Also, Stratos is a villain; much like he was in the early Mattel material. All of the original spellings (Tee-La, Beastman, etc.) are also retained for authenticity.

The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe features many more abandoned episodes!

"Flameron's Slaves"
In the Valley of Flames, Gorpo rescues an injured dragon from a bottomless swamp...only to be captured by the dragon's master, Flameron. With his dragon slaves, Flameron threatens to overthrow Eternia. But not if He-Man can help it. With the aide of Gorpo's dragon friend, He-Man turns the dragon slaves against their cruel master...and saves the kingdom.

* Legally I should say that Michael Reaves did NOT write this episode. This is merely an example of how the episode title card might have looked.

Evil deeds are just beginning!

Bruce Timm's final two panels from "The Revenge of Skeletor!", a minicomic from The New Adventures of He-Man toyline, are fantastically atmospheric! In the first we see a very powerful-looking Skeletor piloting his ship, having escaped from He-Man. You can see the artistic influences of Jack Kirby in this illustration, with a great many areas of black utilized to create a sense of both mood and depth. And in the second panel we see the evil being heading towards Nordor, the moon that features his terrifying likeness. This would actually be the last time that Bruce Timm would work on anything associated with He-Man until the postcard artwork he illustrated for the DVD release in 2005.

"Twiggets in Trouble" #1

Here I present "Twiggets in Trouble", a two part story from rarely-seen preview issue of the UK She-Ra comic. In this story Hordak manages to capture Spragg and Sprocker! See the rebels fight Hordak, a group of Horde Troopers, a fleet of Batmex, whilst saving the Twiggets and freeing a village enslaved by the Horde. All in a day's work for She-Ra! Here are the first four pages. Notice that on page four She-Ra tells Bow that Hordak tricked her into helping him rule Etheria, when of course this was Adora's story!
