"The Factory of Fear" #1

"The Factory of Fear" is an interesting story that appeared in issue eleven of the UK Princess of Power comic. Often in the She-Ra series we saw the people of Etheria being taken as slaves by the Evil Horde. However, on this occasion the slaves are made to work in a factory, assembling Horde Troopers! I love the idea that the slaves are made to build the very robots that capture their fellow Etherians. Here I present pages one to three...

Trap Jaw's Saw Blade.

Trap Jaw had many arm attachments in the He-Man series. Some were more memorable than others, whilst a few appeared inexplicably for a few shots and vanished. Case in point Trap Jaw's Saw Blade. This arm attachment had been billed in some canons as one of his three main attachments. In "The Curse of the Spellstone" it makes an appearance in two shots that are almost instantly forgettable. Of course, the main arm attachment that would only appear in one shot for one episode would be the Claw. But that is another post for another time...

Reunited against Evil!

Here is a lovely full page illustration by Robin Davies from the She-Ra Ladybird book "She-Ra and the Dark Pool". At this point in the Ladybird book releases Robin Davies was still drawing He-Man in his original style, which is nice to see. Eventually he would begin illustrating He-Man in a style closer to the animated series.

She-Ra calls out for the Sorceress.

"Shadow Weaver's Magic Mirror" features a lot of memorable illustrations by Robin Davies, but none are as beautiful as this two page piece featuring She-Ra and the Sorceress. There are so many things to appreciate about this piece; the angle of She-Ra with her sword raised, the beautiful way in which the Sorceress is drawn; even the way in which the two pages are laid out. Robin Davies manages to illustrate the magical embers coming fourth from the sword to perfection! Amazingly this is the only time that the Sorceress appears in the Ladybird books, having not appeared in any of the Masters of the Universe ones. Her only appearance prior to this was in one-shot Masters of the Universe annual published by Ladybird.

Orko's comic strip #69

Almost every issue of the UK Masters of the Universe comic featured an Orko comic strip on the inside front cover. As this Blog continues I will try and feature all of them for your amusement. Here I present the "Orko the Magician" comic strip from issue sixty-nine. One of Orko's secret routines is revealed!

The Cosmic Enforcer in the mud?!

Zodac was a character that was often handled well in his all-too-brief appearances. However, based on what the toyline originally instructed, in some canons Zodac was portrayed as one of Skeletor's Evil Warriors. "Pinnacle of Peril" a story from the one-shot Ladybird Masters of the Universe annual had Zodac working alongside Skeletor. It is amusing to see a character that was treated with such high regard in the animated series, reduced to frustratingly shaking his fists knee-deep in mud.

Now that's a sword!

Robin Davies illustrations on the Ladybird book "A Trap For He-Man" still remain some of my favorite artwork featuring the Masters of the Universe cast. What I like about his early style is that he manages to capture the essence of the toyline, and combine it with the elements of the cartoon that we all know and love. This illustration of Skeletor is not over the top, not heavily detailed, but striking and powerful in its depiction of the villain. I especially like that we see Skeletor's sword, which is referred to as his "energy blade" in the story, held proudly by the character.

Wake up, Clawdeen!

"Catra's Ice Palace", the She-Ra Ladybird book illustrated by the greatest artist of the UK Transformers comic, Geoff Senior, features some unique artwork. Amusingly, Catra's pose here inadvertently shows Geoff Senior's ability to have simple lines create a great sense of strength.
