Imp's transformations!

"Friends Are Where You Find Them" is an episode that I always look back on unfavorably. Oddly there are quite a few entertaining scenes in this episode, with many of them featuring the villains of the She-Ra series. Don Heckman who wrote this episode was easily the best at handling the character of Imp, and his interaction with Hordak. Some of the most memorable aspects of the episode are the numerous transformations that Imp undergoes. This page from the model pack for the episode shows them in all their glory!

Voodoo He-Man?

Here is an interesting panel from "Nightmares!", a memorable story that appeared in issue sixteen of the UK Masters of the Universe Adventure magazine. At one point during the story we see a voodoo doll of He-Man being used by Evil-Lyn. The face of the doll, dare I say, it rather cute; though I do not believe it would sell as well as the Masters of the Universe Classics figures if released!

"The Siren Fish of Etheria" #2

Here are pages five to eight from "The Siren Fish of Etheria", a story that appeared in issue six of the UK Princess of Power comic. I do not believe in any canon we have ever seen Hordak hold a glass of wine before! Plus in these pages we get to see the Butterflyer and Clawdeen in action...

Dragoon's suggested design.

This incredibly unique illustration of Dragoon was illustrated by Steve Hickner, the storyboard artist for "Dawn of Dragoon", the season one episode of He-Man. The model department looked to this illustration for ideas and extrapolated the parts they felt would work in animation, whilst making the character's physical structure more imposing. As interesting as it is to see this early design, I am glad for the final character model that appeared in the actual episode, as I feel it was one of the best of the series!

Why is Gepple my favorite?

The first time I saw Gepple in "A New Beginning", the first episode of The New Adventures of He-Man, I hated him. Alongside the other scientists he seemed to be the most annoying one of all; especially with his, at-times, shrill voice. However, as the series progressed, Gepple soon became my favorite of the scientists. He was the least likely to take credit for something, and by far the most endearing. This may have something to do with the starring role he played in "Crack in the World", in which he is the only scientist to leave his ego behind and work with He-Man in order to save Primus from destruction! Halfway through the series Gepple and Alcon become the only two scientists used on a regular basis; their friendship and bickering working to the series' advantage. Gepple would ultimately become my favorite in "The Guns of Nordor" an action-packed episode in which he uses both his cleverness and wit numerous times to win the day. Now, when is that Gepple action figure coming out?

"The Siren Fish of Etheria" #1

Here are the first four pages from "The Siren Fish of Etheria", a story that appeared in issue six of the UK Princess of Power comic. The caption boxes on the first page paint an interesting picture of the Silver River. I also like the fact that Mermista is referred to as a "water-nymph"...

Unseen Evil Warriors.

This is one of my favorite illustrations from the 1985 UK Masters of the Universe annual. This annual features many beautiful watercolor illustrations, but this is by far one of the best. The mood of the piece is incredibly strong. It is interesting to see both Skeletor and Trap Jaw sneaking around under the noses of the heroes. One of the best things about this illustration is the way in which Trap Jaw is illustrated. He is not the comical villain from the cartoon series that we are used to. This Trap Jaw has more in common with the ruthless killer that appeared in the early minicomics and the 1984 UK annual.

Kothos' second appearance.

"Revenge is Never Sweet" from He-Man's second season featured the return of Kothos; the evil wizard seeking revenge on Evil-Lyn. In his second appearance Filmation decided to change the colors of his costume and lighten his skin tone slightly. Why these changes were made is unknown, but the color scheme in his second appearance works a great deal better than his first!

A brief review #005 - "She-Demon of Phantos"

As many of you will know, in 2010 I published The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. At 300+ pages the book features 700+ pieces of trivia, 460+ deleted scenes, 360+ examples of animation reuse, 380+ quotes, 50+ abandoned episodes, and a LOT more! It is the book that NO fan of the Filmation series can live without! BUY IT NOW!

As an incentive, here is my brief review and rating (as they appear in the book) for "She-Demon of Phantos"...

Although Skeletor is written perfectly in this episode, almost every other character is not. The biggest offender by far is He-Man, who is not only given some awful dialogue, but on numerous occasions uses his muscle instead of his mind to solve problems. Even the Sorceress seems aloof in her giving of information. The basic premise is good, but the way in which the action is staged borders on the ridiculous. Things happen during the course of the episode that make little sense; He-Man is trapped in a photanium body cell, at which point all the villains leave to tell Skeletor, prompting He-Man to escape. This is just one of many examples of how this episode fails to deliver. 3/10

Now, may I ask; what is YOUR rating?

Kothos' first appearance.

"The Witch and The Warrior" is one of the most fondly remembered episodes of the He-Man series, mainly due to the team-up of Teela and Evil-Lyn. It is also memorable as it features the first appearance of Kothos, the evil wizard that steals all of Evil-Lyn's magic. This color guide shows how the character looked upon his first appearance. However, his second appearance would differ slightly...
