Dramatic cover!

The cover to issue two (volume three) of the Masters of the Universe comic from MVCreations is one of my favorite images in recent years. The illustration by Enza Fontana beautifully highlights Prince Adam's sadness, whilst the colors by Jeremy Roberts create an incredible sense of mood. I would love to have seen this image rendered with the classic design of Prince Adam...

He-Man's RARE Viewmaster #5

For your entertainment, over the course of the next month or so, I will present the rarely seen second set of He-Man Viewmaster reels. Most, if not all people, have seen the first set of reels based on the early Masters of the Universe minicomics. The second set of reels are unique in that they are a sequel to the season two He-Man episode "The Shadow of Skeletor"! You will notice that even though this story attempts to tell a new tale, there are numerous elements borrowed from the "The Shadow of Skeletor" and other episodes. See if you can spot all the references!

Disney-esque She-Ra!

Here I present a lovely piece of layout artwork from the season two She-Ra episode "Out Of The Cocoon". We can see that the artist is clearly not all that influenced by the Filmation style of illustration, and has rendered She-Ra with a great sense of fluidity! In my opinion her face is illustrated with such vibrancy, akin to the style of illustration that one would see in a Disney movie! I like that the expression on her face is slightly cocky, smiling as she performs her action.

Ram Man versus Spikor!

We never saw Ram Man battle Spikor in the He-Man cartoon. Come to think of it, the two never even appeared in the same episode, unless you count "A Christmas Special", which I do not! In this interesting illustration from one of the numerous coloring and activity books we see Ram Man chase down Spikor whilst covered in snow! Looking at this illustration maybe it is a good thing we never saw these two meet in the cartoon...

Shadowwing's original design!

With every single episode of He-Man and She-Ra Filmation would have their character model artists illustrate a plethora of designs for each and every character. Some of the initial designs in retrospect look stronger than the final models, whereas others we can only be thankful for the changes! Here we see a piece of character development artwork for the villainous dragon Shadowwing, who appears in the season one He-Man episode "The Return of Granamyr". Although Filmation would end up using a generic dragon model design, it is interesting to see that they had at one point intended to give him a completely new design!

Attacking Catra's tower!

The rarely-seen four story She-Ra Ladybird compilation book was interesting in that aside from including two new stories, it included two previously published stories in "Catra's Ice Palace" and "She-Ra and the Golden Goose", renamed "The Golden Goose" for this publication. The most striking thing about "Catra's Ice Palace" is that due to the size of this compilation book being a different format, the illustrations that accompanied the story were completely redrawn. Previously the story had been illustrated by Geoff Senior, but this time Glenn Steward illustrated it, to tie into the fact that the other three stories in the compilation were illustrated by him! Here I present a pretty striking illustration featuring She-Ra and Frosta astride Swift Wind attacking Catra's tower in the Fright Zone using their respective powers to unleash great fury upon the villainess! Once again I love the simplicity of which Glenn Steward illustrates the characters, because it is beautifully contrasted with the stunningly painted backgrounds.
