He-Man's RARE Viewmaster #10

For your entertainment, over the course of the next month or so, I will present the rarely seen second set of He-Man Viewmaster reels. Most, if not all people, have seen the first set of reels based on the early Masters of the Universe minicomics. The second set of reels are unique in that they are a sequel to the season two He-Man episode "The Shadow of Skeletor"! You will notice that even though this story attempts to tell a new tale, there are numerous elements borrowed from the "The Shadow of Skeletor" and other episodes. See if you can spot all the references!

A brief review #035 - "The Sleepers Awaken"

As many of you will know, in 2010 I published The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. At 300+ pages the book features 700+ pieces of trivia, 460+ deleted scenes, 360+ examples of animation reuse, 380+ quotes, 50+ abandoned episodes, and a LOT more! It is the book that NO fan of the Filmation series can live without! BUY IT NOW!

As an incentive, here is my brief review and rating (as they appear in the book) for "The Sleepers Awaken"...

This episode feels as if it takes place in another part of Eternia, far removed from what we know. Prince Adam and Teela's character interaction is really quite sweet in the opening scenes, with both John Erwin and Linda Gary lacing the dialogue with a smile. The characters of Lord Tyrin and Lady Valtira are wonderfully scripted both in their dialogue and actions. Because these characters are clearly confused between good and evil we are treated to some very interesting storytelling. While Lady Valtira may make for some terrific eye candy, Lord Tyrin is the star of the episode; his lonely tale of disfigurement, love, and rejection; revealing a dark, brooding hero. 7/10

Now, may I ask; what is YOUR rating?

Scorpia's minion.

"The Anxious Apprentice" is a refreshing episode of She-Ra, with the season one episode deciding to focus on Scorpia as the main antagonist, and not the full might of The Evil Horde. One scene of the episode takes place in Scorpia's rarely seen base of operations, Scorpion Hill, and features a servant, referred to in the model pack for this episode as a "minion". Once again the name Bruce Timm pops up, this time as the artist that designed this character for animation!

A Horde Trooper with a pie?!

The storyboards for "Duel at Devlan" by Warren Greenwood see a series very much in development, which is understandable, as the character designs and stock footage were still being finalized. Like with many storyboards Warren illustrated a nice banner-like piece to prior to the episode's storyboard. On this piece we see a near-finalized She-Ra, minus a cape, squaring off with a Horde Trooper, who can be seen wielding a pie as a weapon!

Bow falls!

Here is a lovely piece of layout artwork featuring Bow from the season one She-Ra episode "Glimmer's Story". Although it is the same posed used numerous times to show character's falling in the He-Man series, I like the fact that the layout artist has still taken the time to render Bow in this stock pose. The fact that it is primarily illustrated in red pencil is a bonus! I also like that we can see his chest loosely illustrated under the leg that covers it, showing that the artist was making sure the body was positioned naturally.
