"Quest for He-man" layout artwork

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

Here we see a piece of layout from the He-Man episode "Quest for He-man" featuring He-Man, Gleedil, and Plundor. This scene is fairly static with the only movement being Plundor's entrance into the scene and his dialogue indicated by the "dial" notification. This illustration highlights the way in which most layout artists would rough out their illustration in blue pencil, and then use a traditional pencil to complete the artwork.

Castaspella concept illustration

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

This illustration shows an incredibly early design for Castaspella, to the point that if her name were not on this illustration, all of us would have a hard time figuring out who she is supposed to be. The hypnotic/magical aspect of the design is somewhat in place, but the skimpy clothing and rainbow color scheme are far removed from the final character model we would see appear in the She-Ra series.

Skytree ("The Dragon's Gift") concept illustration

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

Surprisingly Skytree, from the He-Man episode "The Dragon's Gift", went through a few designs, before the final character model was decided upon. Although the concept is still the same, you can see that this version of Skytree has a more human-like face. His appearance is clearly based on that of an old man, with two prominent tufts of leaves either side of his face representing two tufts of hair. From this piece you can also see that Skytree was going to be far bigger, as if you look closely enough you can just about make out a tiny illustration of He-Man.

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

This piece of background artwork from the He-Man episode "Diamond Ray of Disappearance" showcases an artist's ability to create beautiful alien worlds. This area, outside of Castle Grayskull, features the twisted trees and alien landscape that we would come to strongly associate with the planet of Eternia.

"The Curse of the Spellstone" layout artwork

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

Here we see a piece of layout artwork from the He-Man episode "The Curse of the Spellstone" featuring He-Man dueling with Skeletor. This is one of two pieces of layout artwork. The first features the characters in held positions, squaring up to one another; and this, the second piece, shows the action which is to take place during the scene. The layout artist on this occasion chooses to illustrate some very on-model versions of both He-Man and Skeletor.

Glimmer concept illustration

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

This illustration shows one of the numerous designs conceptualized for Glimmer for the She-Ra series. At this point in the design process you can see that she bears a great deal of resemblance to her final character model. You can also see from this piece that the artist is still referencing the jewel in the palm of her hand, something that was abandoned by the final character model.

Granamyr ("The Dragon's Gift") model sheet

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

This is one of the earliest finalized character models of Granamyr from the He-Man episode "The Dragon's Gift". This model sheet is unique in that it shows the aged dragon standing upright, a position Granamyr rarely ever assumed in the series. Another of Granamyr's model sheets shows his ability to fly (explaining that his wings actually expand), while another shows his height comparison to He-Man.

Background line art from PP041 "Glimmer's Story"

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

Although the line art is quite fine, this background illustration from the She-Ra episode "Glimmer's Story" beautifully showcases the female statue located in Castle Bright Moon that hold the Moonstone in its hands. Once again, as a testament to the creative minds at Filmation, the script merely called for a simple pedestal on which to house the Moonstone. The artist thought this statue would make more of an impact than a simple pedestal. And rightly so!

"Happy Birthday Roboto" layout artwork

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

Here we see a prime example of how the layout artwork was illustrated to both guide and influence the animators when they came to work on their particular scenes. This illustration of Orko and the robot that guards Man-At-Arms' laboratory from the He-Man episode "Happy Birthday Roboto" focuses on just how frustrated Orko is with the situation. Although the animation in the episode is more in-keeping with the style of the show, the layout artist illustrates the kind of comedy animation they would like to see utilized in the scene.

Attak Trak ("Evilseed") model sheet by Fred Carrillo

Throughout this month The Power and The Honor Foundation in conjunction with The He-Man and She-Ra Blog will be showcasing never-before-seen Filmation production artwork.

For many fans of the Masters of the Universe toyline, the Attak Trak's appearance in the cartoon was confusing. However, in the He-Man episode "Evilseed" we finally see the toy accurate (though color-inaccurate) version of the Attak Trak make an appearance. This illustration by Fred Carrillo shows the other artists and animators how He-Man should pilot the vehicle.
