"Double Trouble" #1

I teased a panel from this story many, many years ago! At long last I finally present "Double Trouble", a story that appeared in issue fourteen of the UK Masters of the Universe Adventure magazine. You can never have enough stories featuring a clone of He-Man. Okay, well, you can, but this one is unique in that Skeletor is the He-Man clone in question this time around! Here are the first four pages...

Faker's got a gun?!

Appearances from Faker were always interesting to note, as the character made so few appearances. In this illustration from one of the many Masters of the Universe coloring and activity books we see He-Man and Man-At-Arms fighting Faker, who on this occasion is oddly wielding a gun! Although He-Man has his shield raised, the blast still appears to be striking Man-At-Arms...

"Catra's Sword of Honour" #2

For your entertainment I present the story "Catra's Sword of Honour" as featured in issue seven of the UK Princess of Power comic. In this story Catra, musing over what gives She-Ra her powers, forces Madame Razz to make her a sword similar to She-Ra's Sword of Protection. Aside from being incredibly strong, the newly constructed Sword of Honour has the ability to control living creatures. Here are the remaining three pages of this story...

GIANT Picture Book (Heroic Warriors) illustration #24

Golden Book published a great deal of Masters of the Universe material during the eighties. Two of the most notable and yet rarely seen books are the Giant Picture Books; oversized quality publications printed on thick quality paper featuring artwork by Fred Carrillo. One book focused on the Heroic Warriors, whilst the other focused on the Evil Warriors. Here I present, from the Heroic Warriors book, the second of the two black and white illustrations focusing on the Royal Palace, resized for you to enjoy! This fantastic, action-packed illustration shows Prince Adam and Teela dueling with staffs, as Man-At-Arms looks on. Much like the last illustration I showcased, the "dueling with staff" theme appeared numerous times in various Masters of the Universe canons.

He-Man Presents...

Many storyboard artists when working on He-Man and She-Ra would often use the first few panels of a storyboard to illustrate an introductory piece. Keith Tucker, Robert Lamb, Steve Hickner, and Tom Sito were four that spring to mind! Sharon Rolnik illustrated some beautiful looking boards during her time on He-Man, and here you can see the introductory piece illustrated by her for "Things That Go Bump in the Night"...

Duke Buck?

Here is an interesting banner-like introductory piece of artwork illustrated for the season one He-Man episode "Golden Disks of Knowledge". Warren Greenwood, like many of the storyboard artists working on both He-Man and She-Ra, enjoyed adding an illustration prior to the actual episode's storyboard. What is worth mentioning is that Warren Green credits himself as Duke Buck, something he included in some of his other storyboards. The composition is simple, but striking, as we see a large Golden Disk behind the episode's title, as well as Zanthor trapped within the mystic mirror.

The "Prince Adam practicing archery" theme would appear numerous times in various Masters of the Universe canons.

Entrapta laughs?

In issue three of the UK Princess of Power comic we once again are confused as to the allegiances of one of the main cast members. In this panel we can see the villainous Entrapta alongside both Adora and Frosta laughing at the antics of Madame Razz and Broom! The UK comic seemed to confuse Entrapta with Double Trouble on occasion. In this story Entrapta pretty much just stands around, much like Frosta, observing the events of the story...

Causing a cave-in!

I love the action and power in these two panels by Bruce Timm from the Masters of the Universe minicomic "King of the Snake Men". You can see a lot of his style in these minicomics which were illustrated incredibly early in his career. If you pay particular attention to the face of He-Man you can see the very heroic jaw line that Bruce Timm would later utilize on his design for Batman on the now-classic animated series of the nineties. I am always amazed just how much energy Bruce Timm was able to pack into these tiny panels. When one looks back over the plethora of Masters of the Universe minicomics for the best, one will often find Bruce Timm's name attached to it!
